Meet Lovie: Our Lavender Sweetheart

Published on 8 June 2025 at 19:30

Hey there, Bloom & Barn friends! Kelley here, and I'm absolutely bursting with excitement to introduce you to our newest feathered family member – Lovie, our gorgeous lavender pullet who's been stealing hearts left and right around the farm!

If you've never seen a lavender chicken, you're in for a treat! Lovie is absolutely stunning with her soft, silvery-lavender plumage that catches the light like morning mist. She's what we call a "pullet" – a young hen who hasn't quite started laying eggs yet but is well on her way to becoming one of our star performers. At just a few months old, she's already showing us glimpses of the magnificent lady she's going to become.

True to her name, Lovie is an absolute sweetheart. While some of our other chickens can be a bit... shall we say, dramatic (looking at you, Henrietta!), Lovie has this gentle, almost zen-like presence about her. She's the kind of chicken who approaches you with curiosity rather than demands, and she has this adorable way of tilting her head when you talk to her, as if she's genuinely listening to every word.

Watching Lovie navigate the established social dynamics of our coop has been fascinating! She's respectful of our veteran hens like Hen Solo and Apple, but she's not a pushover either. She's found her perfect spot in the middle of our flock's hierarchy – not challenging the queens, but definitely not letting anyone push her around. It's that perfect balance of sweet and sassy that makes her so endearing.

Although Lovie hasn't started laying yet, we're keeping a close eye on her development. Lavender chickens are known for laying beautiful, cream-colored eggs, and based on her breed characteristics, we're expecting her first eggs to arrive in the next month or two. I have a feeling they're going to be something special – just like she is!

For those curious about the breed, lavender chickens get their unique coloring from a recessive gene that dilutes black pigment into that gorgeous silvery-lavender shade. They're relatively rare, which makes having Lovie on our farm extra special. The lavender gene affects not just their feathers but also gives them those distinctive slate-colored legs and that elegant, almost ethereal appearance.

Keep an eye out for updates on Lovie's journey from pullet to productive hen. And if you're ever considering adding chickens to your own backyard flock, I can't recommend the lavender varieties enough. They bring such beauty and serenity to the coop!

Until next time, give your feathered friends an extra treat from us!

Happy farming!

P.S. – Don't tell the other girls, but Lovie might just be working her way up to favorite status around here. Shh! 🤫
